DBZ for Dubbies

Hopefully many of you Dubbies out there aren't dubbies by choice! Any real DBZ fan knows that FUNimation is ruining it and most dubbies want very badly to see some Japanese DBZ. (NOTE: Ok ok, so some of them are spelled the same way... but those ones have different pronounciations... call me a purist)

A little lesson in "Romaji"

What the Hell... er... HFIL is Romaji? Romaji is the Romanization of Japanese characters. This means translating from Kana(Japanese symbols) to our system of writing (or, the ABC's). Japanese is written according to phonetic symbols, where they don't translate to letters, but sounds or groups of letters (ka, wa, etc.). Most people believe that there could be numerous ways to spell the names for DBZ characters, but to keep it simple, why don't we all just adopt the Romaji system? Let's give peace a chance!

Some Romaji letters are pronounced slightly different to the way they are in the English language.

A = ah
E = ay
I = ee
O = oh
U = oo
R = RL (Rolled, a combination between R, L, and D)
B = VB (A combination of V and B, sounds more like "B" so we'll use that)

Not only do letters which stand alone sound different, but combinations of letters make whole new sounds. Try prounouncing them seperately once, for example: why does AI = eye? try saying "Ah ee". Then say it real fast, "Ah-ee", sounds like "eye" huh?

AI = eye
EI = ay
OI = oi (as in boy)
YU/YUU = you
OU = oh

The trick with Romaji is that there are no wasted letters. Nothing is silent, everything has a purpose. For example:

harete - not "ha reet", it's hah rlay tay
oshiyosetekuru - oh shee yoh say tay ku rlu
warawasechae - wah rlah wah say chah ay
